Vitamin B, Choline Supplements May Slow Down Glaucoma, Mice Study Shows

A new preclinical study suggests that dietary supplementation with B vitamins and choline may offer a promising strategy to slow the progression of glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Conducted in mice, the research reveals a potential link between key nutrients involved in cellular metabolism and the protection of retinal ganglion cells, which are progressively lost in glaucoma.

Glaucoma affects more than 76 million people globally, with its most common form, primary open-angle glaucoma, characterized by damage to the optic nerve. While elevated intraocular pressure is a major risk factor, many patients continue to lose vision even after pressure-lowering treatments. This has led scientists to explore neuroprotective approaches that could directly preserve nerve cells.

In the recent study, researchers used a mouse model of glaucoma to investigate the effects of supplementing with vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B12, and choline—a nutrient related to the B vitamin group that plays a vital role in brain health and cellular function. Mice that received the combination therapy showed significantly less retinal degeneration and optic nerve damage compared to those on a standard diet.

According to the research team, these nutrients likely enhance mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative stress—two factors believed to contribute to nerve cell vulnerability in glaucoma. Vitamin B3, in particular, has been shown in prior studies to bolster mitochondrial resilience, while B12 and choline support healthy nerve signaling and repair.

Though the findings are preliminary and based on animal data, they open the door to new, low-risk interventions that could complement existing glaucoma treatments. “Our results suggest that targeting metabolic pathways with specific nutrients may help protect the eye’s delicate nerve cells,” the study’s lead author noted.

Human clinical trials will be necessary to determine if the same protective effects can be achieved in patients with glaucoma. Still, the study adds to growing evidence that nutritional strategies could play a role in managing chronic neurodegenerative conditions.

Until more is known, individuals are advised to consult with their healthcare providers before starting any supplement regimen, particularly if they are already undergoing treatment for glaucoma or other medical conditions.
